01/01/2007 - Rowena blossoms in Wales
ELGIN Moray Skating Academy member Rowena took the bronze medal in the Welsh Championships in Queensferry, Flintshire.
The event was open to the top 23 under 16 girls in the UK, and the 13-year-old from Elgin was the top-placed Scot.
Sister Lauren (11) was also qualified to compete and took 11th place in the short programme section, despite being the youngest skater in the event.
Rowena qualified in Sheffield in August for the British Championships 2007, which will be held in January at the National Ice Centre in Nottingham.
She is one of only a handful of skaters to qualify, placing her amongst the top 13 under 16s in the UK.
She has had a very successful season, taking first place at events in Dundee and Aberdeen, and scoring high points in the new International Judging System qualifiers in Sheffield and Dumfries.
Academy co-directors Graeme Summers and Sue Summers-Farrell said: "This was a tremendous result in Wales, and will give Rowena real encouragement in her preparations for the forthcoming British Championships."
The Academy has had much success this year, with many medal winners in the Dundee National Opens, and Hayley and Claire taking 1st place in their respective sections in Dumfries in October. There has also been a total of 43 NISA test passes in the past couple of months, from level 1 to primary competitive.
